What Is Your Child Learning About Life?

"Whoa...that rude person just slapped me on the butt. Man, it's cold out here! Will someone turn off those bright lights? I'm hungry. I don't like it here one bit, and I want to go back to where all my needs were met, I was secure, and everything was warm and nice."

Remember having those thoughts? Okay, maybe not, but the fact is that at birth, our world as we knew it changed dramatically. As newborns, and for the foreseeable future, we will rely on our parents or caregivers to provide for all of our basic survival needs.

In addition to having physical needs, children begin to form fundamental personality traits and characteristics at a very early age.  These traits and characteristics are shaped in large part by the environment children live in, and the personalities of the people children share their lives with.

Is your child's life heading in the right direction? Check out the following short list of positive and negative characteristics developed in children at an early age...perhaps there are changes you may want to make to ensure a happier, more emotionally stable child!

  • If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.
  • If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.
  • If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive.
  • If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves.
  • If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy.
  • If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy.
  • If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.
  • If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.
  • If children live with tolerance, they learn patience.
  • If children live with praise, they learn appreciation.
  • If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.
  • If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.
  • If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal.
  • If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
  • If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.
  • If children live with fairness, they learn justice.
  • If children live with kindness and consideration, they learn respect.
  • If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and those about them.
  • If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.
